OVERVIEW

The Transylvanian Highlights includes some of the best off-road routes in the country and is designed to avoid the crowded touristic areas in favor of the hidden ones. The tour starts off from the city of Cluj-Napoca and you get to visit some of the most beautiful landmarks in Transylvania, from Sighișoara and the Transfagărășan Road to the Bâlea and the Geamăna lake. We’ll wander through typical Romanian villages and get a glimpse of the local customs and traditions.

OFF-ROAD

On this tour, we’ll venture off the beaten tracks, with plenty of opportunities to drive off-road. We’ll guide you to the mountain tops, from the Făgăraș to the Trascău Mountains and then deep into the valleys. You’ll watch the sunset atop the Latorita Mountains and drive along the dramatic limestone-carved canyons of Apuseni. See the day-by-day schedule below.

The Transylvanian Highlights is a hotel based tour. You are going to spend each night in a different place, ranging from 4* hotels right in the centre of the old town to pensions on top of the mountain or just by the lake.

Accommodation and meals (half-board), as well as the lunches, the coffee or the tea are included in the tour price.

ITINERARY

Cluj (noon arrival) – Saxon Area off-road – Sighișoara

We start directly from the airport. After a short briefing we sign in for the jeeps and we start in the hilly area next to Cluj Napoca heading to Sighișoara.

We’ll eat a box lunch in a shady place on the way, then drive on and off-road in the pastoral area of the Saxon villages, to observe the picturesque settlements, the sheep and cow folds, the majestic Făgăraș Mountains ridge, the cow self-returning to the stables in the evening, the Gipsy colorful costumes, carriages and behavior.

We’ll arrive in Sighișoara just in time for dinner and right after you’ll get the chance to explore the downtown and enjoy a nice cup of coffee, a drink or a delicious cookie.

Sighișoara – Viscri (fortress, off-road) – Balea Lake – Vidraru Lake

We start with a morning city tour right after breakfast. We’ll continue off-road in the hilly area next to Sighișoara, taking our coffee break in a place overlooking the Făgăraș Mountains. We’ll get closer and closer until we start climbing along the Transfăgărășan road.

We’ll stop for a short walk at the Bâlea glacial lake and, after crossing the tunnel to the south slopes we start descending on the serpent road all the way to Vidraru dam. We’ll take a 1 hour long boat trip from the hotel deck accompanied by some cold beers just before dinner.

Vidraru dam – off-road to Olt Valley – asphalt to Voineasa area – off-road in Latorita Mountains – Transalpina Road – Obârșia Lotrului

We start our off-road experience just 5 minutes away from our hotel, crossing the Făgăraș southern shoulder ridges all the way to Olt River. We’ll cross traditional villages aiming to understand the difference between Wallachian and Saxon and we’ll stop for a coffee and a chat with the locals.

After a short drive on asphalt along the Olt Canyon we’ll encounter several artificial lakes along the Lotru River and we’ll choose a shady spot next to the river for our picnic lunch.

The afternoon starts off with an off-road drive in the rough Latoritei Mountains, climbing steep to the alpine pastures. We’ll remain on top of the Latorita Mountains until the sunset, in a wild and beautiful area before we rush down to the bottom of the valley to find our comfortable hotel.

Șureanu Mountains off-road – the perfect place for a barbeque – Pianu de Sus

We start driving through the deep gorge carved by the strong stream of Jieț river all the way to the city of Petroșani. Here we can buy fresh meat and supplies for the lunch planned barbeque.

We’ll continue with a challenging off-road drive in the Șureanu Mountains, crossing muddy meadows in the old oak forest of the Șureanu National Park. We’ll arrive to the perfect lunch spot for a relaxing meal and an afternoon nap.

Shortly after we are done with the barbeque, we’ll continue descending to the Dacian land of the Mureș Valley, ending the day in a comfortable hotel.

Șureanu Mountains off-road – the perfect place for a barbeque – Pianu de Sus

We’ll enter the Apuseni Mountains crossing the Metaliferi Range. Along the way we encounter some of the best view points of the area and we traverse traditional villages and pastoral areas.

We’ll follow the steep relief lines climbing to the ridges and then we’ll be going deep into the canyons. The day ends in the village of Colțești where you will try an excellent Hungarian goulash.

Off-road in the mountain, Geamăna lake, traditional agriculture areas, hay houses and barn roofs, beautiful landscapes

We’ll cross the Trascău Mountain off-road on carriage trails used to carry hay. We’ll observe the traditional ancient agriculture technologies drove by nature’s pace. There will be specific hay roofs on top of the old houses around us.

The coloured Geamăna lake tells us the story of the cooper mine in a place where paradisiac nature fights the hell of pollution. The limestone canyons complete the fabulous landscapes of our route.

Accomodation: Albac area

This the day when we get to relax the pace, hanging around Albac in the middle of the Apuseni nature reserve. The high plateau of Scărișoara is always animated by the locals living in traditional houses, names “coliba”, their summer settlements.

We’ll have the chance to see the traditional way of living, based on the forest and alpine pastures exploitation. We’ll visit some local craftsman and enjoy the off-road in the dramatic limestone carved canyons of Apuseni. We end the day in Cluj.
